Highlighting the talents of innovative up-and-coming designers, awarding the movers and shakers, holding showhouses and generally raising the profiles of designers of color may not end discrimination, but it is a start. Hopefully, it will open eyes to the fact that great design is color blind. Other like-minded organizations are working to upset the imbalance in the design industry. ArtCenter is a private nonprofit fully accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). Renowned for both its ties to industry and social impact initiatives, the College is the first design school to receive the United Nations’ Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status. This was achieved through the use of natural colors and natural materials. Through the panoramic windows, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the forest, and if you go to the balcony or terrace, you can smell it.

But it can be complicated to customize, and we have to watch the SKU count when managing inventory. Founded in 1930 and located in Pasadena, California, ArtCenter College of Design is a global leader in art and design education. With a current enrollment of approximately 2,423 students (57% female and 43% male, representing more than 50 countries), the College has a student/faculty ratio of 8 to 1. ArtCenter offers 11 undergraduate and 10 graduate degrees in a wide array of industrial design, visual and applied arts disciplines, as well as minors for undergraduate students in Business, Creative Writing, Material Science, Research, and Social Innovation. The Industrial Design Program offers a joint MS/MBA in partnership with the Drucker School of Management, and the Integrated Studies department offers a First-Year Immersion program that supports students’ transition to undergraduate-level majors with a specialized two-semester course of study.

Black Nova is an Italian design-driven Company with a focus on pursuing excellence in developing and producing innovative Smart Design Keypads and Touch Panels providing unparalleled user experiences. Black Nova Collections are designed with bold personality and obsessive attention to every single detail. According to recent statistics from the American Society of Interior Designers, black designers account for less than two percent of its membership. We embraced three pillars to define what every Black Nova keypad should be. First, they need to be beautiful, inspirational, sleek in design, and customizable.

In the last few decades of growth in home and building automation we have seen the evolution of the modern touchpanel, where the software-based UI (User Interface) creates the custom experience. The other common in-wall control – keypads – are still mostly rooted in a limited number of plastic colors, some offering custom engraving to a variety of button configurations. – The AXES® Collection features fast-response touch points with custom-engraved icons and text.

Hospitality is our top market, representing about 70% of our business. AXIS features nine buttons, while ARIA is more premium and able to show more feedback and understand more gestures which is a more residential – and learnable – solution. Seven years ago, an Italian company sought to address the large opportunity of a fully custom luxury keypad market. They had a compelling prototype design; a paper thin slice of marble over an LED matrix, capable of recognizing gesture and self-adjusting brightness while controlling lighting, climate, media and more.

AXES adds a touch of sublime to the minimalist aesthetic with a special touchpanel series dedicated to the hospitality industry. Large, easy-to-use buttons with engraved icons and texts are flush into the design frame creating a perfectly smooth surface. With this holistic approach, the products are fully customizable and able to blend into any space.

House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski

house of leaves pdf

Johnny claims that his mother meant him no harm and claimed to strangle him only to protect him from missing her. It is unclear, however, if Johnny's statements about the incident—or any of his other statements, for that matter—are factual. Entirely written by Truant, this chapter recounts the conclusion of his downward spiral after Lude's death. He then describes setting fire to the completed manuscript, and, after a struck-out passage in purple – the only such passage in the entire book – Truant tells an ambiguous story about a woman who loses her baby in childbirth. She found Navidson emaciated and maimed by frostbite and injury, but they materialized together safely outside the house. Much of the film is described as footage from several ventures into a dark hallway which appears in the living room.

The Navidson Record

With more people than ever before using the library—a record 17 million last year alone—your support helps the Library provide people with the resources they need to succeed and thrive. The Los Angeles Public Library serves the largest most diverse population of any library in the United States. When House of Leaves first came out years ago, it was nothing more than a poorly packaged pile of papers, fragments of which occasionally surfaced on the Internet. No one could have foreseen that the small but dedicated search for this horrible story would soon dictate.

The Whalestoe Letters

An appendix provided by the editors includes a miscellany of writings from both Zampanò and Truant excluded from the body of the book, an obituary for Truant's birth father, and a series of letters later compiled in the Whalestoe Letters. A segment titled "Contrary Evidence", compiled by the editors themselves, instead contains what appears to be evidence of the Navidson Record's actual existence, with a series of artworks depicting segments or concepts from the film as well as what purports to be a single, bootleg frame from within the film itself. Truant, however, debunks The Navidson Record as a wholesale fabrication, citing his own findings that the film does not exist; that Navidson is a fictionalization of the real-life photojournalist Kevin Carter; and that Zampanò outright invented numerous sources and quotes. Truant also determines that Zampanò copied secondary sources to hide his own inexpertise in various subjects.

Some pages contain only a few words or lines of text arranged oddly to reflect the events of the story, often creating an agoraphobic and claustrophobic effect. The novel is also notable for its many narrators, who interact with each other in elaborate and confusing ways. The book was followed by a companion piece called The Whalestoe Letters, a series of letters written to the character Johnny Truant by his mother while she was confined in a mental institution. During the explorations, with Navidson lost in the maze for days, Karen is seen to have confronted this loss and is said to have overcome her dependency on him, finally making good on her ultimatum to depart with their children. Afterwards, while separated, Karen produced a short film focused on her relationship with Navidson, which led to her returning to Virginia in search of him.

After several ordeals, one explorer was killed and another rescued, but the house itself then transformed in a hostile fashion, killing Navidson's brother Tom and forcing the family to frantically escape. While trying to find the history of a residence can be very difficult there are some things you can do at the Los Angeles Public library to start such a search. House of Leaves opens with a first-person narration by Johnny Truant, a Los Angeles tattoo parlor employee and declared unreliable narrator. Truant is looking for a new apartment when his friend Lude tells him about the apartment of the recently deceased Zampanò, an old blind man who lived in Lude’s house. House Of Leaves book pdf download for free or read online, also House Of Leaves pdf was written by Mark Z. Danielewski. Discover the nightmarish tale of a house that is bigger on the inside than the outside that still inspires devotion among an army of fans...

More paradoxically, Truant notes that Zampanò purports to authoritatively write about filmmaking and cinematography despite being blind. At the same time, Truant's own factual errors, limited knowledge, and open admission to adulterating Zampanò's work also throw his own reliability into question. The text is further marred by missing pages, missing footnotes, missing supplemental documents, and text accidentally or deliberately destroyed by Zampanò, Truant, or unknown causes. In support, Zampanò cites or quotes articles, journals, symposia, books, magazines, TV programs, and interviews, many supposedly dedicated to this film. Zampanò discusses not only Navidson's filmmaking techniques, but also segues into topics such as photography, architecture, Biblical studies, and radiometric dating, often interspersing overwhelmingly esoteric tangents, several of which devolve into nonsensical, page-long lists of only superficially relevant items.

house of leaves pdf

Tom extended his stay to assist in the hallway explorations and subsequent rescue, in which he camped alone for days in the maze to maintain radio contact, built an improvised pulley to assist in the rescue, and, ultimately, saved the Navidsons' children from the house at the cost of his own life. Rather than Danielewski, the title page of House of Leaves credits two men named Zampanò and Johnny Truant as its authors. In an introduction dated 1998, Truant claims to have found the book as an unfinished manuscript left by the recently deceased Zampanò, having never met the author in life. Truant, an apprentice at a Los Angeles tattoo parlor, decided to complete and submit the work for posthumous publication. The rest of the book is punctuated by footnotes by Truant, whether fact-checking, editorializing, translating, or interjecting seemingly irrelevant personal anecdotes.

About Mark Z. Danielewski

Truant's work is further supplemented by uncredited professional editors, who profess to have, in turn, never met Truant. The format and structure of House of Leaves is unconventional, with an unusual page layout and style, making it a prime example of ergodic literature. Contains numerous footnotes, many of which are footnotes themselves, including references to fictional books, movies, or articles.

Ancestry Library Edition has a United States Obituary Collection you can access from any of our locations. Now this incredible novel is available in book form, complete with full-color original words, vertical footnotes, and second and third appendices. In "Exploration #4", an expedition planned to last over a week, Roberts exhaustively provisioned his team, and also brought a gun. On their return after reaching the bottom of the staircase, they found their own caches of supplies vandalized by unknown causes.

Holloway Roberts is described as an accomplished professional hunter and explorer, contacted by Reston to lead the explorations in Navidson's place. Roberts and Navidson were said to have developed a rivalry on first meeting, Roberts coveting Navidson's success and fame, and Navidson resenting relinquishing his discovery to another. Over several explorations, Roberts, accompanied by assistants Kirby "Wax" Hook and Jed Leeder, found the spiral staircase but could not reach the bottom after many hours. Intellectually engrossed by the anomalies of the house, Reston capably helped Navidson in measuring the house, organizing the explorations, and even rescuing the explorers, journeying through the maze himself despite his disability. Tom is described as Navidson's fraternal twin, the two brothers once being close but estranged for eight years for unknown reasons.

A handyman by trade, Tom is said to be a contented underachiever with no fixed residence or attachments, as well as a recovering alcoholic. He is also described as comical and well-liked by all his acquaintances, in contrast to Navidson's cold professionalism. Much of this information is attributed to a supposed 900-page scholarly treatise analyzing the Navidson brothers as parallels to the Biblical brothers Esau and Jacob. Zampanò's text includes an entire chapter extending this analysis, but most of the text is destroyed without explanation.

8 Best Hawaii Cruises for Every Type of Traveler

interisland hawaii cruise

Each island offers a different climate, attractions, environment, and style, and even on the same island, there are major variations depending on location. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore. On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kona region, on the west coast, tends to be much drier. Along the same line, weekend plane tickets almost always cost more due to locals traveling to different islands for weekend staycations or family visits. If your schedule allows for it, booking an interisland trip on the weekdays will almost always save you money and keep you away from larger crowds. With just eight miles separating some of the closest major Hawaiian Islands (such as Lanai and Maui), this Pacific archipelago is a tempting destination for island hopping.

The islands of Hawaii only offer a few cruise ports for ships to visit. (UnCruise Adventures is the exception, calling in a few smaller places that the big ships can't go.) All of them are top-notch, so it's hard to say which one is the best overall. Princess Cruises is definitely the leader in the two-week, round-trip Hawaii cruise department, offering more sailings out of more homeports than any other line.

This trip aboard the 4,905-passenger Quantum of the Seas offers passengers much to do during days at sea, including a surf simulator, bumper cars, a skydiving simulator, and a 360-degree observation deck. After departing Vancouver, British Columbia, the ship spends four days at sea before it arrives in Lahaina, Maui, for a day of exploring. Options include strolling through the historic town, visiting Haleakala Crater, whale watching, and swimming at Kaanapali Beach. The final stop is Oahu, where passengers spend as much time as they want exploring Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, or the rest of the island before heading home. This 17-day voyage from Los Angeles takes place aboard the Viking Star, an all-veranda small ship that carries a maximum of 930 guests. The first stop is the Big Island, where guests can view Kilauea by helicopter, visit waterfalls, or explore Hilo Bay by kayak.

The shorter, one-way sailings are a good compromise for travelers who don't want to take a full two weeks or can't imagine 10 days at sea on one vacation but do want some relaxing time on the ship. The longer one-off journeys are more for folks wanting to explore a wide swath of the Pacific, with Hawaii being a small part of that deep dive. The staff are very experienced with the itinerary, the excursions and activities, the ship, and seemed to really enjoy working with each other.

Disney Cruise Line: 10-night Hawaiian Cruise from Vancouver Ending in Honolulu

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter. Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B.

The itinerary is busy if you participate in everything, but allows opting out choices for people who want to relax. The route is a slow pace, and flexible to allow for sudden changes in weather or whale sightings. The weather was perfect, and we got up close and personal with whales, dolphins, green sea turtles and many fish while snorkeling. We also got insights into life in the less visited islands of Lana'i and Moloka'i.

Or, stop by historic attractions, such as Honolulu's Iolani Palace or the Big Island's city of refuge, to learn about the ancient Polynesian culture or the Kingdom of Hawaii. On a cruise, you're free to sample Hawaiian cuisine during your time in port, but can take as many meals as you want on board, many of which are already covered in your cruise fare. Additionally, lodging prices in Hawaii can be high due to its popularity as a vacation destination. Restaurants are also more expensive than on the mainland because many staples have to be shipped in from afar. Why should you cruise instead of booking a hotel or resort stay on land?

On Oahu, visit Honolulu's Waikiki Beach and pay your respects at Pearl Harbor. View active volcanos on Hawaii, the Big Island, seek out water sports in laidback Maui and escape from it all in Kauai. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Royal Caribbean Cruises will offer 9-night, 12-night and 13-night Hawaii cruises beginning in 2014. Port of departure is Honolulu with visits to Nawiliwili, Kauai, Kailua-Kona and Hilo on the Big Island as well as Lahaina, Maui. The sail from Hilo to Kailua-Kona is done at night, taking you past the lava flows of Kilauea. The 9-night itinerary includes Vancouver, while the longer sailings also stop in Victoria on Vancouver Island before heading to Vancouver on the mainland. The Radiance of the Seas and the Rhapsody of the Seas are the ships involved and both have been extensively upgraded.

The Pride of America, owned by NCL, is the oldie but goodie in the Hawaiian cruise industry. As the only registered United States vessel of this size, it’s been offering seven-night cruises within the Hawaiian Islands for years. Recent competition spurred a $30 million overhaul of the ship, including the addition of new suites and cabins suitable for solo travelers. Cruises depart Honolulu and visit Maui, Kauai and both the Hilo and Kona sides of the Big Island.

Find itineraries departing from all the major departure ports that sail to Hawaii. You can cruise to Hawaii out of California from Los Angeles, San Diego or San Francisco. The Seattle cruise port and Vancouver port also provide a number of different itineraries to Hawaii during the season. We add new itineraries every day so you'll find a variety of options when you find your next cruise to Hawaii with Cruise Critic.

At 1,041 feet in length and able to accommodate 2,850 passengers, the Solstice is large, comfortable and capable of entertaining passengers for extended sails across the Pacific Ocean. One interesting feature is an on-board glass artist who gives demonstrations on glassblowing. The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and really anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the Aloha spirit of the 50th state.

Caribbean Cruises: Cruise to Caribbean

how much is a caribbean cruise

Third and fourth guests (or more if you book a large suite) pay a fare that is lower than the fare for the first two guests. Some lines run specials offering free or $99 third- and fourth-person fares from time to time. To demonstrate how much a cruise really costs, I'm going to break things down so you can add up the costs that you would likely incur.

Oceanview Cabins

Factors that go into the price include the type of cabin you choose, length of cruise, when you sail, and even the ship and cruise line you sail. While Caribbean ports are open year-round, the best time to cruise the Caribbean depends on your budget, interests and weather preferences. To avoid rainy and stormy weather, think carefully about cruising during hurricane season, which occurs from May through November. If this article has taught you anything about the price of a cruise, it’s that a cruise fare can vary considerably. You’ll almost certainly be able to find a cruise to fit your vacation budget, whether you book a cheap interior room or lavish suite. Not every Royal Caribbean cruise ship has studio cabins, and those that do only have a few studio cabins which tend to get booked quickly.

The package that varies most in price is the Deluxe Beverage Package. Its price is higher during peak travel times and on cruises with stops at private islands. Buying this package ahead of time is always cheaper than on board.

If you’re booking a cruise on your own, the best way to start is by researching online. Read reviews of different cruise lines and compare prices to find the best deal. Once you’ve found a cruise you’re interested in, call the cruise line or book online. This often leads to guests being surprised at the total cost of the cruise when they get the final bill. This is why it’s nice to receive an onboard credit when booking the cruise to help offset some of these unforeseen extras once onboard.

Cruising, in general, is all very impressive, but it is often the small details that as a whole that often help differentiate each cruise product’s overall customer experience. Timing your cruise right can save you thousands of dollars, and can give you a better all-around experience. Booking early will give you more options at the same price point.

Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean

One trend we're seeing are the costs of a cruise going up each year. In 2023, prices jumped considerably, and the industry as a whole is seeing some of the highest prices in recent memory. Please note that infants and children are subject to normal guest pricing. The cruise line provided it at no charge, but the total would have been $490. You might also spend money on extra-fee gelato, ice cream sundaes, fancy snacks or baked goods at onboard coffee shops.

They say they do things differently to the mainstream cruise lines, and regularly sail to Caribbean destinations from Miami. There are multiple dining options onboard all ships and the food is generally of a high quality. The atmosphere onboard is very lively and you’ll find many families and young cruisers cruising with Carnival. I have taken many MSC cruises over the years, and although they are quite different to American cruise lines, i find they offer great value for money.

These can range from a simple bus tour to an all-day adventure zip-lining through the jungle. Shore excursion prices and the types of availability may differ from port to port. For example, a Western Caribbean cruise may have fewer ports and lower port fees overall compared to an Eastern Caribbean cruise. Some popular ports may also charge a higher fee than a less popular port. Each of these things may come into consideration when comparing cruise vacation prices.

You can also find a wide array of three-day Caribbean cruises, five-day cruises and longer journeys depending on which port of departure you choose. Taxes and fees will be automatically added to your cruise fare upon checkout, and the exact cost of taxes and fees will vary based on your cruise length and itinerary. Shore excursions, drinks, specialty dining, spa treatments, and wifi are just a few optional add-ons you can choose to buy for your cruise.

On average across cruise lines, the amount comes out to between $ per person, per day. Even though ports in this region are open year-round, the best time to cruise the Caribbean depends on your budget, weather preferences and how much you're willing to tolerate crowds. To avoid rainy and stormy weather, think carefully about hurricane season, which occurs from May through November, and be sure to check out our guide to cruising during hurricane season.

Being flexible with your travel plans can save you a lot of money. These cabins have a window that offers passengers a view of the ocean. They are a bit more expensive than interior cabins but still offer good value for the price. They typically offer basic accommodations and amenities but can still be fun. In short, you can see that the average cruise price per person depends strongly on the cruise itself and the personal on board preferences.

Interior cabins can be as much as 10 times cheaper than the swankiest suites on the same sailing. In 2017, for example, we saw interior cabins on a 12-night Great Barrier Reef cruise on Celebrity Solstice priced at $2,349. Of course, those figures are averages across the entire company. Specific cruises can be much lower… or much higher… depending on your specifics. For example, sailing an interior cabin is drastically cheaper than sailing in a balcony room. And cruises departing in January or February are less expensive than sailing at the height of summer.

MSC are an Italian cruise line and the experience onboard is quite different to cruising with an American or British cruise line. Both cruise lines do cruise elsewhere but Carnival focus most of their cruises in the US whereas MSC cruises are mostly in Europe. The prices of cruises do tend to increase in August when the schools break up and demand increases. I’ve taken three Christmas cruises and all three were brilliant. That said, cruising over Christmas can easily be double the cost of cruising in January.

Tips for saving money on a cruise

Discover the diverse ports of the Caribbean, from the charming Amber Cove with its vibrant local markets, to the picturesque island of Aruba known for its pristine beaches and lively nightlife. Sail to Barbados, home to breathtaking coral reefs and historical landmarks, or explore the cultural melting pot of Curacao with its colorful architecture and Dutch influence. For example, Royal Caribbean's soda package is currently $12.99 per person, per day but can fluctuate during peak travel times. It may only take a few sodas per day to make the package cost-effective. The most common dining expenses are for eating at specialty restaurants.

The exception is your porter, or the person who carries your luggage on and off the ship. Porters do not receive a percentage of the total gratuities, but should still receive a small tip. Bring enough cash to tip your porter $1 to $4 per person, or $1-2 per bag.

Price Variety by Time of Year

An additional beverage cost to keep in mind is corkage fees for bottles of wine you bring onboard (within the cruise line's limits). On most ships, the fee is only charged if you take the bottle to the dining room or a bar to be opened and served there. NCL charges the corkage fee at embarkation, regardless of where you plan to consume the wine. On my Celebrity cruise, I booked a cabin category that included breakfast and dinner in an exclusive specialty restaurant, so I did not pay for any food upcharges onboard. I did, however, buy a cookie in port on Catalina Island, so I spent $5 on extra food. All cruise lines include meals at several onboard restaurants in their cruise fares, but most also give passengers plenty of ways to spend money on dining and snacks.

We used a realistic range of prices from Royal Caribbean guests who have booked cruises and paid for drink packages in the past 12 months. They can also help you have a seamless vacation and explain any extra transfer costs or fine print you need to know. Internet access onboard cruise ships has been a notorious sore spot for years.

How to Calculate the Total Price of a Cruise

The total price of a cruise is rarely just the ticket price and some government fees. Of course, you’ll have to add on the cost of transportation, gratuities, and any discretional spending you do once onboard to the total cruise cost. However, a cruise vacation still offers a fantastic vacation value considering all that is included in your cruise fare. It’s possible to embark on a Royal Caribbean cruise and spend nothing extra onboard. Lines that include some alcoholic drinks in the cruise fare usually offer a package to upgrade to premium drinks, which may have a broader choice of drinks or venues where they are available.

“Okay, Cruisewatch,” you might say, “That’s all well and good, but I’m a lone wolf. But as you can see, on a per-person basis the cost for a 7-day cruise can run around $2,000 when you factor in everything you’ll spend. Onboard Spending (~$85-$120 per day)By far the biggest expense of taking a cruise is the fare, but onboard spending can be a considerable chunk of change.

The Deluxe Beverage Package also throws in one more bonus — milkshakes at Johnny Rockets. Royal Caribbean's Water Packages are available in 12- and 24-packs of one-liter bottles of Evian water. Take in the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.

Gratuities and service charges on the cruise

Before booking a shore excursion through an outside company, though, be sure to review the pros and cons of not booking through the cruise line. Room service is not included in your cruise fare aside from a complimentary continental breakfast option. How much you pay for a hotel can vary just as much as cruise fares, depending on the date of your trip, hotel brand, and other factors. If you live close enough to drive to the cruise port, these costs may be quite low. But many people fly to their cruise, and that will add more to the price.

Examples include $9.95 per delivery on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Norwegian Cruise Line ships; Royal Caribbean and Celebrity offer continental breakfast for free. Other lines skip the room service fee but charge a la carte for specialty items like breakfast smoothies or steak and eggs ($15, Holland America). Snacks in the in-room fridge/minibar incur a charge on most cruise lines.

Plus, they can assist with other aspects of your cruise vacation, including booking shore excursions and specialty restaurants. We've also added in the daily gratuities for each passenger in a standard cabin. (Tips for suite passengers might be higher.) Use these numbers as a guide to help you calculate the total price of a cruise. Cruises can be expensive, so it’s important to set a budget and stick to it.

There are other costs to consider when calculating the overall price of a cruise. Cruise prices are also dynamic, meaning you can find a fantastic deal one day only to have the price increase the next. Knowing this, let’s take a look at a few sample prices of various Royal Caribbean cruise itineraries. Salon charges are likely to be higher than most of us pay at home, but a little cruise pampering never hurt anyone. There simply are too many variables when it comes to cruising to leave it all up to chance. The medical coverage outside the country alone is reason enough to include this in your cruise budget.
